General Surgery

The Grand Rapids / Michigan State University general surgery residency is a five year accredited, non-pyramidal program committed to the development of skilled and competent surgeons, fully prepared to pursue academic faculty positions, enter general practice, or obtain competitive fellowship training positions in surgical sub-specialties.

This unique program offers residents a diverse range of surgical experiences ranging from the large volume of complex tertiary center referrals to the broad spectrum of community-based private practice. Clinical rotations occur at both Butterworth and Blodgett campuses of Spectrum Health and the Saint Mary's Health Care, state of the art facilities that serve as the largest clinical campus of the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. As clinical instructors in surgery to medical students, residents gain valuable experience in their development as surgical educators. In addition, residents are provided research exposure at the Van Andel Institute, a world-class facility dedicated primarily to genetic and molecular cancer research.

The combination of these exceptional components within a humane and supportive work environment where education is given the highest priority, make the Grand Rapids / Michigan State University program one of the best opportunities available for general surgery residency training.
